Anti-Racist Schools
Create Anti-Racist School Policies
At every school, the students, staff, guardians, and the community must all actively ensure that students maintain their right to a safe and supportive learning environment.
Social Justice School Standards
Identity
Students will express pride, confidence and healthy self-esteem without denying the value and dignity of other people.
Diversity
Students will focus on understanding and appreciating differences and respectfully engaging with everyone.
Justice
Students will recognize that power and privilege influence relationships and will challenge bias, discrimination and exclusion.
Action
Students will express empathy, show responsibility, and speak up when people are excluded or mistreated. Schools will uphold zero-indifference policies, addressing each instance of hate speech through education, repairing harm, and restoring relationships.

Responding to Hate and Bias at School
High expectations at school.
Hate, disrespect, and intimidation have no place at school or in the community. Encourage discussions around respectful ways people should interact and reinforce these expectations daily.
A no-slur school.
Learning environments must be free of slurs. Do not tolerate insults related to ability, appearance, culture, gender, home language, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, body size or social class.
Students speak up!
When you hear a slur, speak up. Schools do not remain silent in the face of hate.

All children are capable of repeating hateful language; be ready to step in to educate and help repair harm. TED Education on Bullying >
Help teach your child to hold themselves accountable by learning, seeking help, apologizing, repairing relationships or changing their behaviour.
Understand impact versus intent. Explain that our intent does not take priority over the impact of our actions.
Discuss with your child that racism and prejudice will never be taken lightly or jokingly.
